Sri Ramakrishna Kalpataru Utsav [Kalpataru Day / Diwas] is celebrated all over the world on 1st January of every year. We, the religious people, do show our homage & prayer to Sri Ramakrishna Deb on 1st January [1st day of every year] from wherever we are. We believe our prayer on Kalpataru Day will be fulfilled. Here we will get to know what is Kalpataru Utsav of Ramakrishna? Significance of Ramakrishna Kalpataru Utsav? Places where Ramakrishna Kalpataru Utsav celebrated?

Ramakrishna Kalpataru Utsav

Kalpataru Utsav, annual religious festival, is celebrated by monks, disciples, devotees & disciples of Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission. Ramakrishna Math, Mission & Vedanta societies located world-wide follow the teaching of Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa Deb.

Ramakrishna Kalpataru Utsav was started on 1st January 1886 when followers believe that Ramakrishna Deb revealed himself as God. Since then, Ramakrishna Kalpataru Utsav is celebrated on 1st January every year. The most significant celebration of Ramakrishna Kalpataru Utsav takes place at Dakshineswar Kali Temple, located on the banks of Ganga in North Kolkata, where Sri Ramakrishna spent most of his life. The Kalpataru Utsav of Ramakrishna is now celebrated at every Ramakrishna Math, Ramakrishna Mission & Vedanta Societies all over the world.

Now, let's check out why 1st January is called Kalpataru Day of Ramakrishna. Sri Ramakrishna was suffering from Throat Cancer during that time and with his few closest followers he moved to Cossipore Udyan Bati from Dakshineswar. On 1st January 1886 was relatively good day for Ramakrishna; thus he took a walk in the garden area of Cossipore Udyan Bati. At that time, Ramakrishna asked Girish, one of his closest followers, [following conversation] -
  • Ramakrishna: 'Who do you say that I am?'
  • Girish: God incarnate, come to Earth out of mercy for humankind.
  • Ramakrishna: What more shall I say? May you be awakened?

After that, Ramakrishna Deb entered an 'ecstatic state' and started touching his followers, who experienced a variety of new states of consciousness including vivid visions. Sri Ramakrishna was in the state of 'wish-fulfilling tree' (Kalpataru / Kalpavriksha).

Since then, 1st January of every year; followers of Sri Ramakrishna started praying Ramakrishna on the very special day of Kalpataru with the believe that their 'wishes will be fulfilled'.
